Universitas Brawijaya Strengthens Global Collaboration through World Water Monitoring Day 2026 to Advance Sustainable Water Management

Malang, 25 September 2026 – Universitas Brawijaya (UB) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable water resource management through the World Water Monitoring Day 2026, held as part of the International Water Innovation Series. The international event provided a platform for knowledge exchange, bringing together academics, researchers, and practitioners from different countries to discuss science- and technology-based innovations and strategies for sustainable water management.

Organized by Globalizing UB under the coordination of the Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, and Internationalization of Universitas Brawijaya, the event featured distinguished international experts, including Prof. Dato’ Dr. Nor Azazi Zakaria, Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Ecohydraulics for Sustainable Water Infrastructures for SDG 6 in Asia and the Pacific, Universiti Sains Malaysia; Dr. Luki Subehi, Acting Head of the Research Organization for Earth Sciences and Maritime Affairs (ORKM), National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and Head of the Research Center for Limnology and Water Resources, BRIN; and Dr. Amir Talebi, Environmental Technology Researcher and Founder of HydroTex, Germany.

In his welcoming remarks, the Rector of Universitas Brawijaya emphasized that water sustainability represents one of the major global challenges requiring multidisciplinary approaches, international collaboration, and science-based innovation.

“Water is a fundamental resource that supports human life, ecosystem sustainability, food security, and economic development. Therefore, monitoring water quality and quantity, implementing data-driven management, and developing innovative technologies are essential to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation,” said the Rector of Universitas Brawijaya.

According to the Rector, the organization of World Water Monitoring Day 2026 represents an important opportunity to strengthen collaborative networks among higher education institutions, research organizations, government agencies, industry, and communities in developing sustainable solutions for water management.

“Universitas Brawijaya is committed to continuously contributing to water sustainability through education, research, innovation, and international collaboration. This commitment is also aligned with UNESCO’s efforts to promote sustainable water resource management and advance Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): Clean Water and Sanitation,” he added.

During the event, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Nor Azazi Zakaria shared perspectives on the role of ecohydraulics and sustainable water infrastructure in strengthening the resilience of aquatic systems. Ecohydraulics represents an interdisciplinary field that integrates hydrology, ecology, and engineering to develop water management systems that are more adaptive to environmental change.

Meanwhile, Dr. Luki Subehi highlighted the importance of freshwater ecosystem monitoring, limnological research, and science-based water resource management. In his capacity as Acting Head of the Research Organization for Earth Sciences and Maritime Affairs (ORKM), BRIN, and Head of the Research Center for Limnology and Water Resources, BRIN, he emphasized the importance of scientific data in understanding aquatic ecosystem dynamics and supporting evidence-based decision-making.

Prof. Andi Kurniawan, Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, and Internationalization of Universitas Brawijaya, also emphasized UB’s commitment to strengthening education, research, innovation, and sustainable water resource management. This commitment is aligned with UB’s efforts to develop international cooperation in the field of water, including the proposed establishment of a UNESCO Chair within the framework of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP).

Through this initiative, UB seeks to expand its contribution to water education, capacity development, research, and knowledge exchange, thereby supporting sustainable water resource management at the national, regional, and international levels.

The forum is expected to further expand international academic and research collaboration, particularly in water education, capacity development, technological innovation, and the contribution of higher education institutions to addressing global water challenges.

The World Water Monitoring Day 2026 thus represents part of UB’s strategic efforts to strengthen its role as a higher education institution actively contributing to the global sustainable development agenda and fostering international collaboration toward a more sustainable and resilient water future.
